Cumbernauld this weekend

27 swimmers had a very successful 2 days at the Cumbernauld Open Age Group and Senior Meet.  First medals of the day went to Gareth Allen who won bronze in the 50 back and Jenny Rogerson who won bronze in the 50 fly.  Gareth also won silver in the 100 fly, gold in the 50 free and gold in the 100 free.  Jenny also won gold in the 100 breast, silver in the 50 breast, and silver in the 100 fly.

All other swimmers did PBs in various events.  Nicola Allen came 4th in the 100 back and got into the final of the 50 back with a 3s PB and came 4th.  In the 100 free several swimmers had very impressive PBs – Sarah Loudon (7s), David Allison (9s), Fraser Allison (10s), Creag Doctor (5s).  Ella Shilliday got a 5s and 7s PB in the 50 breast and 100 breast respectively and Cara Smith had a 6s PB in 50 breast and 4s PB in 50 fly.  Ciaran Nelson got PBs in all events and all other swimmers got PBs in most of the events they swam in.

For many of the younger swimmers it was their first gala and they all swam extremely well with some very good PBs.  Very impressive too was the way in which the team supported each other.

Gala Phone

Please use the gala phone to let the Team Manager know of any late withdrawals from the gala.  Please phone before or during the warm up i.e. before the races start.  Thereafter please use the phone for emergencies only, any other communication can not be dealt with during a gala.  Sending a text would be preferable as galas are noisy and the team manager can’t leave the poolside to answer the phone.

Martin Cremin swims personal best in 1500 freestyle at World Trials

Martin Cremin swam 16:05.39 at the World Trials in Sheffield yesterday to finish 14th overall.

Several Stirling Swimmers had success yesterday.

Andrew Hunter made it through to the final.  His time of 49.82 in the 100 freestyle is a new Scottish Record, Jak Scott finished 15th, with Jak earning a new personal best time of 51.04.

Lucy Ellis swam a very determined race and posted a time of 57.12.  She will be first reserve for the final lying 9th overall, but perhaps more importantly, her time is inside the consideration standard for the European Junior Championships.

Jamie Ross just missed the cut finishing in 10th in the 200m breaststroke.

Andy Hunter and Jim Anderson shines in day three of world trials

In the men's 200m freestyle final, the big guns were out in force.  Andrew Hunter (Stirling Swimming/Stirling ITC) was fastest going into the final, and lined up alongside Ross Davenport (Loughborough University/Loughborough ITC), David Davies (City of Cardiff/Loughborough ITC) and Robbie Renwick (City of Glasgow).

It was Hunter who made the early running turning first at 50m but then Davenport changed gear and made his intentions known pulling away at 100m.  Hunter was quick to respond and stayed on his shoulder and by the 150m mark, David Davies was also making a move.

By this stage, however, Davenport had secured victory and won in a time of 1:46.50, just outside David Carry's British Record (1:46.47).  Hunter kept hold of second place and finished in 1:47.14 while David Davies was third in 1:47.50.  Renwick had to settle for 4th in 1:48.85.

After the race Hunter was first to congratulate Davenport and was clearly pleased by his own placing,

"I set a personal best in the semi finals last night and to come close to that time again tonight gives me confidence.

"I now train with Doug Frost at the ITC in Stirling and it has been positive to get a fresh pair of eyes on my training.  It was quite a decision to stay at Stirling, but I persisted with the programme and am now reaping the rewards.

"I will chat with Doug about my performances here and decide how best to progress and improve so I secure my place in Rome."

Jim Anderson was back to winning ways taking the title in the men's MD 50m backstroke event (1:09.06).
